Fears Watch Company Limited, known as “Fears”, is a family run British watch company first established in 1846 by Edwin Fear in Bristol. The business ran for 110 years until it closed in the late 1950s. In 2016, the year the business would have celebrated it’s 170th anniversary, it was re-established by Edwin Fear’s great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill.
Fears is launching ‘Fears Custom’, a new premium service that will offer customers the opportunity to commission made-to-order straps and bespoke engraving on the Redcliff watch.
Fears Custom allows a Fears watch to be combined with a special strap made from a rainbow of exotic skins. With nearly 80,000 possible colour combinations, each Fears Custom strap is made to order, making them unique to the owner. The strap can be specified with the owner’s initials blind stamped on the lining, making it truly personal. Handmade in the same Belgium atelier where the current range of Fears goat’s leather straps are produced, the straps keep the same elegant profile and easy-release spring bars.
In addition, Fears Custom engraving offers the watch’s owner to re-create a crest, motto or special date on the case back. Going beyond the popular Fears Engraving service, which offers 2-4 initials, Fears Custom engraving employs the complete skill of the same master hand engraver in Mayfair, London. This allows the blank section on the watch’s case back to effectively become a blank canvas.
Fears Custom engraving starts with a computer drawn design of what the client is imagining, which is then put on a ‘digital’ case back. Once this is approved, the watch is hand engraved and delivered in special all-black packaging.
Fears is a brand that really knows its customers and want to offer a truly personal service and as a family business, they are in the privileged position of being able to focus not just on the next few months or years, but make decisions which instead focus on the next few decades.
