A. Lange & Söhne Opens New Chicago Boutique Inside Historic Tribune Tower

A. Lange & Söhne has officially opened its newest U.S. boutique in Chicago, marking a significant return to the American Midwest.

Situated at 435 Michigan Avenue within the legendary Tribune Tower, the Saxon manufacture now occupies one of the most architecturally significant addresses on the ‘Magnificent Mile’. For serious collectors, this is more than a retail opening, it is the arrival of a new destination for German haute horlogerie in one of America’s most design-conscious cities.

Spanning 1,409 square feet (131 square meters), the boutique has been conceived as an intimate horological salon rather than a traditional retail space. Three dedicated seating areas, including two private lounges, allow collectors to engage with the watches in the manner Lange intended; unhurried, personal, and tactile.

“Each timepiece in our collection reflects a familial bond between our watchmakers and collectors, one that is best experienced by putting a Lange watch in one’s hands and on one’s wrist. Our boutiques are designed to share our watches and unique brand story with each customer, and to capture the skill, determination and imagination used by our watchmakers in Glashütte as they work by hand to perfect every detail of the watch for its owner.”

Wilhelm Schmid, CEO, A. Lange & Söhne

The boutique will carry the full Lange collection, from the emblematic LANGE 1 with its outsize date to the mechanical theatre of the ZEITWERK and the technical virtuosity of the Lange tourbillons. Guests will also encounter curated brand installations that explain the double assembly process, hand-finishing techniques, and the philosophy that underpins every Saxon calibre.

The building, which celebrated its centennial in 2025, stands as one of Chicago’s most iconic landmarks. Its façade famously incorporates nearly 150 fragments of historic structures from around the world, including a piece of the Berlin Wall added in 1990. That year is not incidental as it marked the rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne, when Walter Lange re-established his great-grandfather’s manufacture in Glashütte following German reunification. The symbolic parallel between Tribune Tower’s architectural fragments and Lange’s resurrection from history is difficult to ignore.

The Chicago boutique becomes the ninth A. Lange & Söhne point of sale in the United States. It joins recent flagship openings in London, Singapore, and Shanghai, clear evidence that the manufacture continues to expand thoughtfully, not aggressively.

Production remains limited to only a few thousand watches per year, predominantly crafted in gold or platinum, each powered by an in-house movement that is meticulously finished and assembled twice by hand. Since its 1990 relaunch, the brand has developed 75 manufacture calibres, a staggering achievement for a maison that refuses to compromise.

As A. Lange & Söhne continues its journey of horological excellence, the opening of a new boutique in Chicago stands as a testament to its dedication to creating enduring masterpieces, and to never stand still. Or, in the words of writer and art critic John Ruskin permanently inscribed into the floor of the Tribune Tower lobby: “When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone.”
