A passionate equestrian, Yves Piaget infused his love of horses and the high life into a watch that would come to define 1980s glamour. The Piaget Polo was as effortlessly at home in the exclusive nightclubs of New York as it was on the polo fields of Palm Beach.
Wrapping around the wrist like a second skin, the Piaget Polo’s bracelet was so masterfully crafted in Piaget’s workshops that it seemed sculpted from a single block of gold. While shock-resistant and waterproof, it never compromised on luxury or exclusivity, true to Piaget’s commitment to working only with precious metals at the time.
Marketed as ‘the world’s ultimate sports watch’, the Piaget Polo was as revolutionary as it was refined. Its sleek profile was made possible by Piaget’s expertise in ultra-thin movements, both mechanical and quartz. In 1976, the Maison introduced the groundbreaking 7P, then the world’s thinnest quartz movement, which powered early Polo models. By the early 1980s, it was replaced by the even slimmer 1.95mm 8P. Meanwhile, select models also housed the iconic mechanical calibre 9P.
The Piaget Polo 79 revives the essence of the original design, refined with subtle modern updates. In keeping with contemporary preferences, the quartz movement has been replaced by the ultra-thin 1200P1 in-house self-winding calibre, visible through a sapphire crystal case back. The case itself has been slightly enlarged to 38mm for a more balanced presence on the wrist.
Beyond these enhancements, it remains the same masterpiece that captivated the jet set all those years ago now cherished by true connoisseurs. There are many elegant sports watches, but only the Piaget Polo 79 continues to define sports elegance.
