Mr Jones Watches launches its latest limited-edition watch this week, which represents the idea of breathing meaning and magic into everyday objects.
Milagritos is available from Wednesday, 27th August, and has been designed by Mariana Calderón, a Mexican art conservator and employee of Mr Jones Watches.
In Mexican folk art, ‘milagritos’ (Spanish for ‘little miracles’) are small, decorative charms to express gratitude for answered prayers and blessings. This watch design draws from the rich iconography of Mariana’s upbringing, where coins and sacred charms held deep meaning.
As milagritos are often made of metal, the dial features an array of gilded trinkets, including a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe, and a pair of scissors. Housed inside a giant red heart, the milagritos are protected by an illustrated rattlesnake.
As time passes, the snake slithers and entangles itself around the heart, with the head marking the minutes and its rattle pointing to the hours. In Mariana’s soulful design, the heart symbolises desires, and the snake symbolises the cycles of time in which we live and die.
“As a storyteller, my main motivation to create objects and images is to enhance the stories I want to tell. Handmade objects are dear to me, since they carry skill, history, a sense of belonging, and, I believe, a small part of the creator’s soul. Making a watch with all these symbols is a condensation of my love for tangible objects, the stories they tell, and the power we give to symbols.”

Milagritos will be available from 8 am (BST) on Wednesday, 27th August, exclusively from Mr Jones Watches website.
The Designer
Originally from Mexico, Mariana Calderón is a London-based writer, creative multitasker and a valued member of the Mr Jones Watches production team. Either in illustration or written fiction, the core of her work is bold and unusual combinations that feature pop culture elements, spirituality and the supernatural.
With a BA in Fine Art, the physicality of traditional drawing techniques fits her style: heavy on saturated colours, defined ink lines and comic book influences. She had always been interested in fashion and wearable objects since whatever we choose to wear tells an intimate story about ourselves.
A mother and an artist, Mariana is constantly taking on new challenges and will always be fascinated by all things spooky.
