Panerai’s Bronze Legacy Evolves With Luminor Marina PAM01678

Panerai’s storied relationship with bronze enters a new chapter with the arrival of the Luminor Marina PAM01678—the first time the Maison has crafted its flagship Luminor Marina in this characterful metal.

Following the momentum of the steel and titanium Luminor Marina models unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2025, the Bronzo signals a defining moment for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Bronze has long held a place in maritime history, celebrated for its endurance and resilience in the harshest sea conditions. Before stainless steel became standard, it was the backbone of yacht fittings and naval instrumentation. Panerai was among the first to translate the material into modern watchmaking, beginning with the 2011 Luminor Submersible 1950 Bronzo PAM00382, a piece that ignited the contemporary bronze-watch movement.

Panerai’s bronze stands apart. Made from pure copper and pure tin, the alloy is engineered to develop a rich, individualised patina—one that evolves uniquely with the wearer. Fresh from the boutique, the case glows with a warm, gold-toned hue; over time, interaction with air, moisture and heat gently transforms it into a deeply personal finish. The patina protects the case while simultaneously displaying its life story—an irresistible proposition for collectors who appreciate authenticity and material integrity.

“Bronze is more than just a material for us: it’s a territory of expression. The new Luminor Marina PAM01678 immediately evokes the world of the sea, blending the design of our most iconic timepiece with a material that embodies our maritime heritage. Its evolving patina allows us to tell a story of time and the sea, ultimately reflecting the wearer’s journey.”

A New Bronzo, True to the Luminor Marina Identity

The PAM01678 carries forward all the hallmarks of the Luminor Marina lineage:

  • The unmistakable crown-protecting bridge, designed originally to safeguard against water ingress.
  • The classic sandwich dial, here rendered in matte dark blue with a gradient that transitions from deep navy to a lighter centre.
  • The signature small seconds at 9 o’clock, a vital functional cue historically used by Italian Navy commandos.

The beige Super-LumiNova® harmonises with the warm bronze case, producing a refined yet rugged aesthetic. In keeping with 1960s Panerai references, the dial remains clean—no date window, no excess—simply “Panerai” and “Luminor Marina”.

Powered by the New P.980 Calibre

Through the sapphire caseback, collectors are treated to Panerai’s new P.980 automatic movement, offering a three-day power reserve. Its traversing balance bridge enhances shock resistance, while the stop-seconds mechanism ensures precision when setting the time. The movement has been tested across six positions, underscoring the brand’s commitment to reliability.

Slim proportions—just 12½ lignes—allow for improved ergonomics without compromising the bold Luminor identity.

Engineered for the Deep

True to Panerai’s professional heritage, the PAM01678 achieves an impressive 50-bar (≈500-m) water resistance. This advancement is the result of both the streamlined construction of the P.980 calibre and Panerai’s rigorous pressure-testing standards—carried out in water, at 25% above the declared tolerance, as practised by the brand’s Laboratorio di Idee.

The watch features Panerai’s new, refined lug architecture and is delivered on a blue calf leather strap with beige stitching, subtly echoing vintage craftsmanship. An additional blue rubber strap offers versatility for aquatic use.

Offered solely through Panerai Boutiques and authorised retail partners, the Luminor Marina Bronzo PAM01678 is poised to become the next essential addition for the assured collector—someone who values a timepiece shaped by history, engineered for performance, and destined to develop a soul of its own.
