IWC Ingenieur Automatic 42 Crafted Entirely From Ceramic

The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 42 marks the first IWC Ingenieur crafted entirely from ceramic.

The Ingenieur Automatic 42 combines the Gérald Genta-derived integrated bracelet design with a full ceramic execution for the first time. The faithful translation of the original stainless steel design is achieved with a multi-part, pure ceramic case construction.

To create a slim and accurate ceramic version of the Ingenieur watch, IWC used an innovative multi-part case made from black zirconium oxide ceramic. Even the crown and its protection are made from this tough, scratch-resistant material. A thin titanium ring inside holds the screws, secures the movement, and provides 10-bar water resistance. This design stays true to the original stainless steel Ingenieur.

The integrated bracelet connects through the middle links and offers excellent comfort thanks to the ceramic’s lightness. The black dial features the signature “Grid” pattern of small lines and squares, while the black hands and markers are filled with Super-LumiNova® for clear visibility in any light.

For the Ingenieur Automatic 42, IWC perfected the ceramic finish with satin-finishing, sandblasting, and polishing — a difficult process because ceramic is one of the hardest materials and requires diamond-tipped tools.

The watch runs on IWC’s 82110 calibre with a Pellaton winding system that charges the mainspring in both directions, offering a 60-hour power reserve. High-stress parts are also made of durable ceramic. The movement is visible through a tinted sapphire glass case back.
