Fears Introduces Second ‘Endurance Specification’ Watch For Yachting
British watchmaker Fears has expanded its growing Endurance Specification collection with the introduction of the Brunswick 40 ‘Helmsman’ ES, a timepiece engineered specifically for those who spend their time at the helm of yachts and motorboats.
Building upon the distinctive Brunswick architecture, the ‘Helmsman’ ES takes a more purposeful approach to tool-watch design. Every detail has been carefully considered to enhance usability in a maritime environment, resulting in a watch that balances robust capability with the understated elegance for which Fears is renowned.
The 40mm cushion-shaped case receives a fully brushed and media-blasted finish, minimising unwanted reflections from open water and bright skies. Water resistance has been increased to 200 metres (20 ATM), ensuring confidence whether navigating coastal waters or embarking on longer voyages.
A bright white dial serves as the backdrop for maximum legibility. Its matte textured surface reduces glare, while a contrasting Marine Blue chapter ring draws the eye towards the essential time-telling elements. Blued hands and applied indices provide visual harmony and are diamond polished to catch available light, ensuring excellent readability in changing conditions on deck.
“As the second watch from Fears to carry the ES (Endurance Specification) designation, the ‘Helmsman’ is the result of our learnings from last year’s EXPERIMENTAL 01 watch created for a British rowing world-record attempt. During the development of the ‘Helmsman’ we focused specifically on the individuals who will be wearing this watch when out on the water and paid careful attention to understand what they require from a time-telling tool on their wrist. The EXPERIMENTAL 01 showed us the importance of having an anti-reflective case to avoid any sun being distractingly shone into the eye, either from the sky or water. The high contrast, matte white dial was also shown to aid legibility while keeping the dial clear of unnecessary wording.This being a Fears, the watch must still have a degree of elegance to it, which comes from the subtle adjustments made to the Brunswick 40 case architecture. This elegance is a by-product of its function as a tool watch. Further reinforcing its nautical credentials, the watch is paired with a waterproof FKM rubber strap finished in matching white with Marine Blue stitching and keepers. An all-brushed bespoke Fears buckle completes the package, maintaining the watch’s purposeful aesthetic.
Power comes from the Swiss-made La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement, a highly regarded calibre delivering hours, minutes and seconds with dependable precision. Visible through the exhibition caseback, the signature Fears Blue rotor features the brand’s distinctive Bristol flower motif, highlighted in contrasting white, a subtle reminder of the company’s British heritage.
