Fears Arnos Opera Black Is Elegance Personified
There are few dress codes as enduring as black tie. Defined by restraint, elegance and a careful balance between tradition and individuality, its language is one of monochrome contrasts, polished surfaces and beautifully considered details. It is this world of formal evening dress that provides the inspiration for the latest addition to the Fears Arnos collection, the Arnos Opera Black.

Created in Bristol by the Fears Watch Company, the Arnos Opera Black takes the distinctive angular proportions of the Arnos family and gives them a decidedly evening character. Its tall, slim rectangular case provides the framework for a dial that is almost entirely graphic in its simplicity, bringing together a polished black onyx outer surface and a crisp white lacquer central circle.
The result is a watch that feels both familiar and unexpected. The relationship between circle and rectangle was established with the first Arnos in 2025, but where that watch explored colour, texture and negative space, the Opera Black reduces the concept to its most elemental forms. Black and white become the principal materials of the composition, creating a striking contrast while retaining the understated elegance for which Fears is known.
At the centre of the design is a circular dial in glossy white lacquer. Surrounding it is a single piece of black onyx, polished to a deep mirror finish. The stone gives the dial an organic depth, its surface catching and reflecting the light, while the white circle provides a clean focal point from which the time can be read.
The Roman numerals occupy the black expanse of the outer dial, rendered in a narrow neoclassical style with delicate hairline serifs. Against the dark stone they appear almost architectural, reinforcing the relationship between the tall rectangular case and the circular dial within it.

Completing the composition are Fears’ distinctive pipette-shaped hands. Solid and bevelled, each hand features a diamond-polished surface before being coated in black gold. Their sharply defined edges catch the light from different angles, creating flashes of brilliance against the contrasting dial.
The inspiration behind the Opera Black comes directly from the language of formal dress. Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, Fears’ fourth Managing Director, has described his longstanding affection for black tie, from starched white collars and silk brocade to onyx-set cufflinks and shirt studs. Those same contrasts of black and white, hard and soft, polished and textured, have been translated into the watch.
The Arnos case itself has its roots in Fears’ own history. Its proportions draw directly from the company’s rectangular watches of the 1920s and 1930s, while its subtly curved case and caseback allow it to sit comfortably on the wrist. Measuring 33.5mm by 22.6mm, with a 40mm lug-to-lug length and a thickness of just 8.4mm, its dimensions preserve the elegant character of the original rectangular wristwatches while giving the design a distinctly contemporary presence.
Behind the closed caseback is a Swiss-made Sellita SW1000-1b automatic movement, customised for Fears and fitted with a Fears Blue decorated rotor carrying the flower of Bristol motif. The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 46 hours of power reserve. The decision to use a closed caseback also creates an ideal surface for personal engraving, giving the watch the potential to become a lasting reminder of a particular moment or occasion.

The Opera Black arrives with two straps, each designed for a different interpretation of the black-tie idea. An Obsidian Black Epsom leather strap, lined with Fears blue Alcantara, provides an elegant everyday option, while a Grosgrain silk strap introduces an unmistakably formal touch. Both are fitted with Fears’ bespoke Cypher pin buckle.
The name Arnos has a distinctly personal connection to Fears. It comes from Arnos Vale in Bristol, where the company’s headquarters are now located and where Edwin Fear, who founded the company in 1846, and his son Amos Daniel Fear, its second Managing Director, are buried. The collection therefore represents more than a particular case shape. It connects Fears’ present-day design language with the company’s Bristol origins and its long history of watchmaking.
The Arnos Opera Black is also a fitting expression of Fears’ approach to contemporary watchmaking. Rather than relying on complexity, its character comes from proportion, material and detail. The deep black of polished onyx, the gloss of white lacquer, the restrained Roman numerals and the flashes of light from the black-gold hands combine to create a watch whose drama comes from simplicity.
In the world of black tie, knowing when to stop is as important as knowing what to wear. The Arnos Opera Black understands that principle perfectly.
The Fears Arnos Opera Black is a non-limited edition and will be available now, priced at £4,350 including VAT.
