A. Lange & Söhne 1815 TOURBILLON Now With Jet-Black Grand-Feu Enamel Dial

A. Lange & Söhne’s new 1815 TOURBILLON in 950 platinum has an intricate construction of a tourbillon with stop seconds, combined with the ZERO-RESET function and a jet-black, grand-feu enamel dial.

The 1815 TOURBILLON places its stunning complication at centre stage, visible through a wide aperture at 6 o’clock. By continuously rotating, the tourbillon offsets the effects of gravity on the balance, ensuring superior rate stability.

Yet Lange’s interpretation goes beyond convention. The mechanism integrates two exclusive innovations: a stop-seconds device that halts the tourbillon when the crown is pulled, and the ZERO-RESET function, which returns the seconds hand precisely to zero. Together, they allow time to be set with absolute accuracy—an achievement few tourbillons can claim.

Craftsmanship is equally uncompromising. The tourbillon bridge and cage are finished with black polish, a painstaking technique that reveals either a mirror gloss or deep jet-black sheen depending on the light. The dial, crafted entirely in-house from grand feu enamel, demands more than one hundred steps over several weeks—each aperture and chamfer cut by hand to avoid damage to the fragile surface. The result is a jet-black depth that frames the complication with timeless elegance.

Through the sapphire-crystal caseback, the calibre L102.1 reveals its artistry: a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, a hand-engraved balance cock, and the traditional diamond endstone at the heart of the tourbillon. The manually wound movement offers a 72-hour power reserve and incorporates a freely oscillating Lange balance spring paired with a screw balance for enduring precision.

“Many of the traditional elements are legacy features of Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s pocket watches – for instance the three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver, the screwed gold chatons or the diamond endstone for the tourbillon. At the same time, the 1815 TOURBILLON is emblematic of our manufacture’s ambition to continuously evolve this tradition. Hence, our watchmakers took the tourbillon ‒ invented 200 years ago with the goal of improving rate accuracy ‒ to the next level, giving it a contemporary interpretation. Thanks to the stop-seconds device and the ZERO-RESET function, the watch not only runs with the utmost accuracy, it can also be set with superb precision.”

Housed in a 39.5 × 11.3 mm platinum case, the 1815 TOURBILLON combines 19th-century inspiration with modern horological innovation. Limited enamel-dial executions underscore its rarity, securing its place among the most coveted Lange complications for collectors who seek not only precision but also the highest expression of artisanal watchmaking.
