Audemars Piguet Break The Rules Of Watchmaking
In a collaboration few saw coming, but many will want, Audemars Piguet and Swatch have unveiled Royal Pop, a riotously colourful collection of Bioceramic pocket watches inspired by the legendary Royal Oak and the irreverent Swatch POP of the 1980s.
The eight-piece collection reimagines one of watchmaking’s most recognisable silhouettes in an entirely unexpected format. No bracelet. No integrated steel sports case. Instead, the Royal Oak aesthetic is transformed into a playful pocket-watch design intended to be worn however the owner chooses, around the neck, clipped to a bag, slipped into a pocket or displayed as a desk clock via a removable stand. It is bold, eccentric and deliberately provocative.
Royal Oak, Reimagined
At the heart of the collection lies the unmistakable DNA of the Royal Oak. Introduced in 1972, Gérald Genta’s revolutionary design changed luxury sports watchmaking forever with its octagonal bezel, exposed screws and “Petite Tapisserie” dial motif. Royal Pop borrows liberally from these signatures while translating them through Swatch’s unmistakably democratic and playful lens.
The collection comprises eight references, a deliberate nod to the Royal Oak’s eight-sided bezel and eight visible screws. Six models arrive in traditional Lépine-style configuration with the crown at 12 o’clock and a simple two-hand display, while two Savonnette-style versions place the crown at 3 o’clock and introduce a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. The result feels less like a novelty and more like a design experiment that somehow works.
A Mechanical Surprise
While the vibrant aesthetics naturally dominate first impressions, the technical story underneath is arguably more intriguing.
Each Royal Pop is powered by a newly hand-wound version of Swatch’s SISTEM51 calibre, the fully automated Swiss-made mechanical movement first introduced in 2013. Here, the movement incorporates 15 active patents, more than 90 hours of power reserve and a Nivachron™ balance spring developed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet.
Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement also introduces an unusual visual power reserve indicator integrated directly into the barrel drum. When the barrel chambers appear grey, the mainspring is unwound; when they turn gold, the movement is fully wound. It is a clever detail, whimsical, yes, but impressively engineered.
Bioceramic Meets Haute Horlogerie Codes
Royal Pop may be playful, but the finishing details reveal a surprising seriousness. The vertically satin-brushed octagonal bezels echo the finishing language of the Royal Oak, while sapphire crystals front and back add genuine refinement. The familiar “Petite Tapisserie” texture appears across every dial, and Grade A Super-LumiNova® ensures legibility after dark.
The cases, crowns and attachment systems are crafted from Swatch’s proprietary Bioceramic, a composite of ceramic powder and biosourced material derived from castor oil, giving the watches a tactile softness that contrasts with their angular architecture.
Even the audible “click” created when attaching the watch head to its clip has been engineered as part of the experience.
Eight Watches, Eight Personalities
Among the standout references is HUIT BLANC, whose multi-coloured bezel screws lean heavily into the Pop Art inspiration, while OCHO NEGRO delivers a sharper monochromatic aesthetic with stark black-and-white contrast.
Elsewhere, vibrant references such as OTTO ROSSO, GREEN EIGHT and BLAUE ACHT fully embrace the collection’s joyful maximalism.
Dimensions remain compact at 40mm across the case, expanding to 44.2mm × 53.2mm when mounted on the clip attachment, with a slim 8.4mm profile throughout the collection. Water resistance is rated to 2 bar.
A Collaboration Designed to Divide Opinion
And that may well be the point. Royal Pop feels intentionally disruptive, less interested in satisfying traditionalists and more focused on challenging how luxury-inspired watches can be worn, displayed and experienced. In many ways, it echoes the spirit of the original Royal Oak itself, controversial at launch, impossible to ignore.
Whether collectors embrace the concept or dismiss it outright, Audemars Piguet and Swatch have succeeded in creating something increasingly rare in modern watchmaking: a collaboration that genuinely surprises.
The Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop collection launches exclusively at selected Swatch boutiques from 16 May 2026, with purchases limited to one watch per person, per day and per store.
