Hanhart THERMOSPHERE Is Built for Those Who Run Towards Danger

Some watches are inspired by adventure. Others by exploration. The new Hanhart THERMOSPHERE Limited Edition takes its inspiration from something far more demanding, the split-second decisions made by firefighters operating in smoke-filled environments where visibility disappears and time becomes the most valuable resource of all.

Limited to just 112 pieces, this striking new model has been developed in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg State Firefighters Association and transforms the principles of breathing apparatus monitoring into a highly functional mechanical timepiece.

At first glance, the THERMOSPHERE is unmistakably Hanhart. The German manufacturer has built its reputation on producing purpose-driven instruments, and this latest release continues that tradition. Based on the brand’s AQUASPHERE platform, the THERMOSPHERE has been reimagined for use above ground, where heat, smoke and extreme physical demands replace the challenges of underwater exploration.

Time Is Everything

The concept behind the watch is refreshingly authentic. During breathing apparatus operations, firefighters rely on strict time checkpoints to monitor air supply and ensure safe deployment. Hanhart has incorporated these operational references directly into the watch’s rotating bezel, creating an intuitive system that allows wearers to track critical elapsed time at a glance.

Distinctive luminous triangular markers on the bezel correspond to key monitoring intervals, while a highly legible minute hand ensures quick orientation, even in poor visibility. It is a simple yet effective solution that demonstrates genuine tool-watch thinking rather than marketing-driven gimmickry.

The project was shaped by experienced fire service professionals, including Stefan Hermann, Fire Chief of the Reutlingen Fire Department, and Ralf Heizmann, Fire Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department of Vöhrenbach. Completing the development team was Simon Hall, CEO of Hanhart and himself an active member of the fire service.

“The creation of the Thermosphere was something truly special to me because it combines a cause that is close to my heart with my passion for genuine tool watches. When my dedication to the fire service and my professional role come together in this way, the result is a product with a unique sense of authenticity.” Simon Hall, CEO Hanhart

That level of real-world involvement gives the THERMOSPHERE a degree of authenticity that many so-called professional watches struggle to achieve.

Designed for the Mission

The 42mm stainless steel case combines satin-brushed and polished surfaces and is fitted with a blue ceramic bezel insert. Water resistant to 300 metres, protected by a convex anti-reflective sapphire crystal and secured by a screw-down titanium caseback, the THERMOSPHERE possesses the durability expected of a modern professional timepiece.

The colour palette draws directly from the visual language of firefighting. Yellow, blue and red accents provide strong contrast and excellent readability, while the emblem of the Baden-Württemberg Firefighters Association appears on both the dial and caseback.

One particularly thoughtful detail can be found at 12 o’clock. The number “112” – the European emergency telephone number is subtly integrated into the design, with the leading “1” highlighted to reinforce the watch’s connection to emergency services.

Buyers can choose between a Hookstrap™ textile strap, stainless-steel bracelet or rubber strap. The elastic Hookstrap option is especially suited to operational use, allowing the watch to be worn comfortably over protective clothing.

Precision from the Black Forest

Powering the THERMOSPHERE is either a Sellita SW200-1 or Soprod P024 automatic movement operating at 4Hz with a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.

As with all Hanhart timepieces, the movement undergoes individual regulation at the company’s manufacture in Gütenbach. The brand’s stated accuracy target ranges from 0 to +8 seconds per day, reflecting its long-standing commitment to precision and reliability.

Founded in 1882, Hanhart remains one of Germany’s most respected specialist watchmakers, known for producing highly legible, robust instruments that prioritise function above all else.

Final Thoughts

What makes the THERMOSPHERE particularly appealing is that its story extends beyond watchmaking. This is not a timepiece inspired by a fictional narrative or vintage styling exercise. Instead, it has been developed around a genuine operational requirement and shaped by the experiences of those who depend on timekeeping in some of the most challenging environments imaginable.

Limited to just 112 examples, the THERMOSPHERE serves as both a capable tool watch and a tribute to the men and women who answer emergency calls every day.
