Jaeger-LeCoultre Reinterpret The Most Complicated Atmos Calibre Ever Created
Following its 2022 debut, Jaeger-LeCoultre reunites with design legend Marc Newson to deliver a second, even more mesmerising take on the most complex Atmos ever conceived. Limited to just three pieces worldwide, this sapphire, studded spectacle will make its grand entrance during Milan Design Week 2026, and it’s nothing short of breathtaking.

Wound by Air, The Magic of Atmos
Atmos isn’t just a clock, it’s a quiet rebellion against conventional mechanics. Powered by minute changes in temperature, it quite literally runs on air, no batteries, no winding, no fuss. First imagined by Jean-Léon Reutter back in 1928, the concept remains one of horology’s most poetic feats.
A hermetically sealed capsule filled with gas expands and contracts with even the slightest thermal variation. That tiny “breath” winds the mainspring, feeding just enough energy for the balance wheel’s languid, once, per, minute oscillation. A mere one, degree Celsius shift can keep the clock ticking for two days. Effortless. Elegant. Genius.
A Celestial Masterpiece in Glass
Marc Newson’s latest interpretation transforms the Tellurium into a cosmic objet d’art. The movement is housed inside a flawless glass globe engraved with 64 constellations, each brought to life by 539 cabochon, cut sapphires. The effect? A floating star map that feels as infinite as the night sky itself.

Inside, Calibre 590 orchestrates a mechanical ballet of the Earth, Moon, and Sun in three dimensions, a modern homage to Renaissance telluriums inspired by Nicolaus Copernicus’ heliocentric vision. The Earth spins in real time, the Moon cycles with staggering accuracy (off by just one day in 5,770 years), and the entire system tracks seasons, months, and zodiac signs with almost unfathomable precision.
Design Meets Engineering
Newson doesn’t shout, he refines. His signature lies in restraint, subtle material innovation paired with deep respect for the original. Here, “invisible setting” techniques embed gemstones directly into glass, creating a seamless, almost gravity, defying effect.
Traditional craftsmanship is still very much alive, a hand, painted Earth, meteorite inlays, and intricate engraving sit alongside contemporary finishes like brushed aluminium and anodised blue accents. The result is a delicate tension between past and future, exactly where great design thrives.
Time, Redefined
Beyond its astronomical display, the clock integrates a perpetual, style calendar with seasons, months, and zodiac indications. Its annual cycle deviates by just one day every 390 years, meaning no adjustment will be needed until 2416, assuming it keeps running. Which, given it feeds on air, it just might.

Set atop a sculptural base and housed in a handcrafted leather case by Serapian, this is more than horology. It’s theatre. It’s science. It’s art.
The latest Atmos Tellurium Calibre 590 isn’t merely a clock, it’s a universe under glass. A rare fusion of engineering brilliance and design poetry, it captures something few objects ever do, the feeling of time itself unfolding.
