Louis Erard and Konstantin Chaykin have brought back their unmistakable creature in two new expressions, Turquoise, bright and electric; Brown, warm, earthy and touched with gold.

First introduced as one of the most recognisable collaborations between the Swiss watchmaker and the Russian master of horological invention, the wonderfully eccentric Frog returns in two new expressions, Turquoise and Brown.

The personality has not changed. The eyes still stare out from the dial, the pupils still turn as they perform their duties and the crown still sits proudly at 12 o’clock. What has changed is the mood. One is bright, electric and slightly surreal. The other is warmer, darker and more earthy.

Limited to just 178 pieces in each colour, these latest editions demonstrate why the Unfrogettable has become such an immediately recognisable character.

Eyes that tell the time

The inspiration is impossible to miss. The watch is dominated by the face of a frog, with its wide eyes forming the basis of the regulator display. At 9 o’clock, the hour disc takes the place of one eye, while the seconds are displayed at 3 o’clock. A central arrow-shaped hand sweeps across the dial to indicate the minutes. It is an unusual way to display the time, but then conventionality has never been the objective.

Konstantin Chaykin has built his reputation around transforming watches into characters. His Wristmon creations have demonstrated that mechanical watchmaking can be technically sophisticated while also being playful, expressive and unmistakably human in personality. The Unfrogettable continues that idea, combining Chaykin’s distinctive visual language with Louis Erard’s long association with regulator watches.

The result is a watch in which the indication of time becomes part of the character. The pupils appear to follow you, while the rotating eyes bring an element of animation to the wrist. At 6 o’clock, the inscription Louis Erard ♥ Konstantin Chaykin provides a discreet signature of the partnership.

Two moods

The Turquoise version is the more vivid of the pair. Its light turquoise grained base is framed by dark blue-green and purple details, with a two-tone minutes ring adding further colour. Rhodium-treated discs and hands maintain a crisp appearance, while green Super-LumiNova provides the frog with its own form of night vision.

The Brown edition takes the same underlying design in a completely different direction. A light brown grained base is combined with dark brown counters and an ochre minutes ring. The hour and seconds discs, hands and crown receive a warm 5N treatment, giving the watch a subtle metallic glow.

The two watches therefore share exactly the same face, but their personalities are distinctly different.

A case with character

The 40 mm case is crafted from Grade 5 titanium, combining satin-finished surfaces with polished curves. It is a material chosen for its lightness, but here it also contributes to the sculptural character of the watch.

The most obvious detail is the crown. Positioned at 12 o’clock, it is shaped like a royal crown, turning what would normally be a functional component into an essential part of the Frog’s personality. It is polished Grade 5 titanium on the Turquoise model, while the Brown version receives a warm 5N PVD treatment.

Turn the watch over and the movement can be seen through the sapphire crystal caseback. Each caseback is individually marked as one of 178 pieces.

Japanese armour

The watches are completed with black Himeji Kurozan leather, sometimes referred to as black diamond leather. Produced by a historic tannery in Japan, the calf leather is naturally tanned, hand-rubbed and finished using traditional Urushi lacquer.

On the Turquoise model, violet stitching and a violet leather lining add another flash of colour. The Brown version takes a more restrained approach, retaining black stitching and lining.

The combination of Japanese craftsmanship, Swiss watchmaking and Chaykin’s Slavic and Wristmon-inspired visual language gives the Unfrogettable a particularly international personality.

Mechanical mischief

Inside is the Sellita SW266-1 automatic regulator movement. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the 31-jewel calibre provides approximately 38 hours of power reserve and features a specially openworked oscillating weight bearing a black lacquered Louis Erard symbol.

The technical specification is deliberately conventional compared with the watch’s appearance. And that is precisely the point. Beneath the mischievous exterior is a straightforward mechanical regulator, allowing the visual character of the Frog to remain the star of the show.

Louis Erard has spent much of its modern history challenging expectations of what an accessible Swiss mechanical watch can be. Its collaborations with independent creators have become an important part of that identity, and the relationship with Konstantin Chaykin is particularly well suited to the approach.

The Unfrogettable does not take itself too seriously. It does, however, take watchmaking seriously. That combination is what makes it work. With its unmistakable eyes, royal crown and ever-watchful expression, the Frog has already become one of the more memorable characters in contemporary independent watchmaking. Now, with Turquoise and Brown, it has two new moods to add to its story.

The Frog is back, and this time, it has changed colour.
