Mr Jones Embraces The Sun And Moon For Limited Edition Release

Mr Jones Watches, will launch a new bright and cheerful limited edition watch, ideal for those looking for a quirky Valentine’s Day gift.

Designed by British illustrator and printmaker Newton Davey, ecLIPSe features a vivid yellow sun and a metallic crescent moon who come together every hour to share a kiss.

To read the time, the sun’s longest ray points to the hour and the tip of the crescent moon points to the minutes. Every hour, once the minute and hour hands meet, the joyful characters embrace.

Newton Davey (AKA David Newton) is known for his colourful and cheerful designs which feature metallic elements.

To translate his signature style to the ecLIPSe watch, the team at Mr Jones Watches experimented with fluorescence inks, a new type of metal leaf, and water gilding to give the sun’s glasses a mirror finish.

“The Sun and Moon are my favourite icons to play around with. I love the notion of the two in the sky at separate times – yet here they are united and telling the time. I like the idea of them as parent-like figures always watching over us. My illustration and printmaking practice is heavily led by hand-making and not creating on a computer. All the artwork for the ecLIPSe design was hand cut from physical sheets of card. I often hand gild elements in gold or silver to add a feeling of animation. I was thrilled that MJW could take this aspect of my practice and include it in the watch.”

Newton Davey (AKA David Newton) is a Screenprinter, Picture book maker and Gold Foiler. He is a graduate of the Picture Book MA at Cambridge School of Art and a member of Print Club London.
