Ollech & Wajs 8001 Tundra Introduces Nordic Design Themes

The new Ollech & Wajs 8001 ‘Tundra’ is an exciting evolution that introduces Nordic design themes to the brutalist aesthetic of this landmark reference.

The Tundra was born from a closed collaboration between OW and Norwegian Architectural Design Collective – MIR. The Bergen-based studio is known for its ground breaking CGI work which explores the relationship between architecture and the environment. Together they developed a custom, co-signed version of the 8001, exclusively for the studio and its community of artists and designers. Though the ‘MIR watch’ is a very limited production, it generates so much interest they felt it deserved a wider audience. So, now a slightly modified version of the watch will become part of the main OW collection. It’s named ‘Tundra’, after the rugged landscape that inspired it.

The new 8001’s organic green fumé dial is encircled by an imposing engineered bezel. The spoke-like radial pattern etched into the brushed stainless steel creates a sense of movement as it interacts with light. Norwegian industrial architecture often frames scenic features like fjords, forests, and mountains, making nature a central element of the design.

What elevates the OW 8001 Tundra to a higher ground lies beyond its tough exterior. Inside the familiar angular 39.5 mm X 12.7 mm tonneau case is a Chronometer-certified, deluxe version of the Soprod Newton Precision P092. The bespoke automatic, date-only calendar movement has 23 jewels and a 44-hour power reserve. The unique COSC certification serial number of each movement is engraved onto the main plate, assuring that it has undergone and passed stringent testing. Each watch also comes with its own Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres certification papers.

The OW Tundra is every bit as brutal as the original 8001, forged in Bergen, refined in Zurich, hand-crafted in the Swiss Jura, and ready for any environment.
