Vacheron Constantin Pay Tribute To Classical Haute Horlogerie

Vacheron Constantin Pay Tribute To Classical Haute Horlogerie

Vacheron Constantin enriches its Traditionnelle collection with three new interpretations of the Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, each housed in an elegantly poised 36.5 mm case.

For the first time in this case size, Vacheron Constantin offers two non–gem-set references: one in 18K 5N pink gold, the other in 18K white gold. They are joined by a third model in white gold, distinguished by a beautifully executed diamond-set bezel. Together, they expand the Traditionnelle family while maintaining the collection’s unwavering devotion to classical Genevan codes.

Aesthetic Codes Rooted in Centuries of Craft

The Traditionnelle line draws its identity from the spirit of 18th-century haute horlogerie, an era that shaped Vacheron Constantin from its founding in 1755. Every detail reflects an allegiance to functionality expressed with grace: the stepped round case that plays with light, the fluted caseback that echoes historical pocket watches, slender straight lugs, and a finely executed bezel that keeps the profile crisp and refined.

On the dial, clarity and balance take precedence. A traditional silver-toned opaline background hosts faceted Dauphine hands, applied baton markers in gold, and a subtle railway minute track—design elements that collectors will instantly recognise as cornerstones of the Traditionnelle aesthetic. The overall impression is one of quiet sophistication, where classical harmony meets modern precision.

A Perpetual Calendar with Real Heritage

The perpetual calendar holds a venerable place in the Maison’s history. The earliest known example from Vacheron Constantin dates back to 1884, an observatory watch that remains in the brand’s private collection. The complication’s purpose—to effortlessly navigate the irregularities of the Gregorian calendar, including leap years and variable month lengths—has always been a test of true horological mastery.

In the new models, this heritage is expressed through the celebrated Calibre 1120 QP, a movement widely regarded as one of the most elegant perpetual calendar mechanisms ever created. Measuring just 4.05 mm thick and constructed from 276 components, it represents the Maison’s dual expertise in ultra-thin engineering and complex calendar mechanisms—fields in which Vacheron Constantin has set multiple longstanding records since the 1930s.

The 1120 QP displays day, date, month, a 48-month cycle with leap-year indication, and a beautifully rendered moon phase and age of the Moon. Its architecture demands an intricate balance—components must be exceptionally fine yet robust enough to ensure reliability across generations.

Hand-Finishing That Respects Tradition

Viewed through the sapphire caseback, the movement reveals its full artistry. Bridges are adorned with Côtes de Genève, edges are meticulously hand-bevelled, and jewel sinks are given circular satin finishing. Even the unseen mainplate is circular-grained, a testament to Vacheron Constantin’s refusal to compromise on craftsmanship.

The 22K gold openworked rotor, shaped as the Maltese cross—a signature of the Maison—adds another layer of refinement as it glides across the movement, catching the light with each rotation.

Proportions Inspired by a Modern Icon

At 36.5 mm, the case pays homage to the revered Ref. 43031 from 1983. Introduced during the height of the quartz crisis, that model signalled a resurgence of mechanical excellence and quickly became one of the quintessential Vacheron Constantin perpetual calendars of its era. Its influence is evident in the new trio’s balanced layout, crisp case architecture, and unwavering dedication to legibility.

Three Interpretations, Each with Its Own Character

While united by form and movement, each new reference brings a distinct personality:

  • 18K 5N Pink Gold
A study in tonal harmony—pink gold hands and markers mirror the case, while a deep-blue moonphase and matching blue alligator strap add depth and elegance.
  • 18K White Gold (non–gem-set)
A subtle interplay of metals, pairing a white-gold case with pink-gold hands and markers. A lighter blue moonphase and a newly introduced light-brown alligator strap create a refined and quietly modern contrast.
  • 18K White Gold with Diamond-Set Bezel
A restrained yet luxurious interpretation. Grain-set diamonds on the bezel, lugs, and crown reflect the cool tones of the opaline dial, complemented by a dark-blue moonphase and matching strap.

A Contemporary Expression of a Timeless Philosophy

Through these three new models, Vacheron Constantin reinforces its vision for the Traditionnelle line: a celebration of enduring craftsmanship, technical mastery, and the essential beauty of classical haute horlogerie. For collectors who value lineage, proportion, and uncompromising execution, the Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin remains one of the purest expressions of the Maison’s horological DNA.
