Late last year we witnessed the birth of Patek Philippe’s new Cubitus collection embodying a unique blend of boldness and elegance, it’s first square watch.
According to Thierry Stern, President of Patek Philippe, 85% of the watches around the world are round. Why is this the case? When watches were first invented in the late 15th/early 16th century they came in different shapes and sizes, however, they were predominantly round. As we moved through the 17th and 18th centuries, watches were generally kept in the pocket on a chain, so would be brought out regularly to check the time. At this time the vast majority were round, as a square watch would have been impractical as its edges would have caught on the fine silk of a waistcoat. Fast-forward 200-years and the round watch still dominates, but for how much longer…
The development of this new movement involved the filing of six specific patent applications. The grand date is displayed through a twin aperture at 12 o’clock. The distinctive design of the square case, with its 45 mm diameter and elegantly slender profile, is accentuated by the contrast between polished and vertical satin-brushed finishes.
This platinum timepiece is adorned with a baguette-cut diamond set on the bezel at 6 o’clock. The modern, ‘casual chic’ style is enhanced by a strap in navy blue composite material with fabric pattern.
The dial is a sunburst blue, horizontally embossed, with white gold applied baton-style hour markers and white luminescent coating. The case is made of Platinum with a diameter (10–4 o’clock) of 45 mm. The height of the watch is 9.6 mm and is water-resistant to 30 m. It has a screw-down crown and sapphire crystal case back.
The self-winding 240 PS CI J LU movement has 353 parts with a power reserve of min. 38 hours – max. 48 hours. The off-centre winding rotor is a 22K gold mini-rotor.
The other models available include the bold design (above) in a two-tone rose gold and steel version, with alternating polished and vertical satin-brushed finishes. This model is equipped with self-winding 26-330 S C calibre featuring a stop-seconds function and a central 21K gold rotor adorned with the same horizontal motif as the dial.
Patek Philippe reinvents the ‘casual chic’ style in a brand-new steel model with a modern, distinctive design enhanced by alternating polished and vertical satin-brushed finishes.
The new square case with its rounded edges is distinguished by its elegantly slim fit on the wrist. The horizontally embossed dial features an elegant sunburst olive green colour. The steel bracelet is equipped with a lockable adjustment system and a patented Patek Philippe fold-over clasp ensuring both comfort and security.
There have been mixed reviews on the new Cubitus, but we admire the fact that Patek Philippe have decided to accelerate the trend for the square watch becoming an icon of the future.
