Constantime Genesis: A Watch Born Beneath the Vaults of Transylvania
Independent watchmaking is emerging from some unexpected corners of the world. In Târgu Mureș, Romania, Constantin A. Mureșan is building Constantime around a simple idea: that a watch should carry the identity of the place from which it comes. Its inaugural creation, Genesis, draws directly on the medieval architecture and craftsmanship of Transylvania.
There are places where history is difficult to escape. Transylvania is one of them. Across the region’s rolling hills stand medieval citadels and fortified churches, structures built to endure and passed from one generation to the next. For Constantin A. Mureșan, founder and watchmaker of Constantime, this landscape is more than a source of visual inspiration. It is the foundation of a new independent watchmaking project.
Constantime was born in Transylvania, Mureșan explains, a land where time has been measured not only in hours, but in generations. His philosophy is equally direct, a watch should carry the identity of the land from which it was born.
That idea is expressed in Genesis, Constantime’s inaugural mechanical watch. Rather than attempting to emulate an established Swiss aesthetic, the brand has looked inward, drawing on the architecture and history surrounding its workshop in Târgu Mureș.
Vaults, swords and identity
The Genesis dial takes its inspiration from the vaulted ceilings of Transylvania’s fortified churches and medieval citadels. Its polished Roman numerals and hands are intended to catch the light in a manner reminiscent of the blades that once defended these lands.
It is an interesting translation of history into contemporary watch design. The connection isn’t literal or nostalgic; instead, architectural forms and historical references have been distilled into the proportions, surfaces and details of a modern mechanical watch. The result is a watch with a clear sense of origin.
Genesis measures 41mm in diameter and 11mm thick, with a stainless-steel case, 20mm lugs, sapphire crystal and a premium leather strap. Inside is a manually wound Swiss mechanical movement, identified by Constantime as the DB9, based on the ETA 6497 architecture. It operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a 45-hour power reserve. But it is the components produced in Mureșan’s own workshop that give Genesis its strongest independent character.
Made in Transylvania
The dial is manufactured and finished in-house, as are the hands. Constantime describes this as part of a broader commitment to progressive vertical integration, giving the young company greater control over its visual identity.
For an emerging independent watchmaker, that distinction matters. The intention is not simply to assemble an existing collection of components, but gradually to develop an increasingly personal approach to watchmaking.
Each dial is individually produced and finished in the Constantime workshop, while the hands are also manufactured and finished internally. The company says this allows each watch to become more than simply a timekeeping object, with personalisation forming part of the story.
Genesis is deliberately small in scale. Production is limited to just 25 watches, making the model the first chapter rather than an attempt to establish a large production line. And Mureșan is already looking beyond that first chapter.
Building an independent identity
Constantime is currently developing its own proprietary case architecture, with the intention that future cases will be produced in Transylvania. It is an ambitious next step for a young independent brand. The longer-term objective is to increase the proportion of components developed and manufactured locally, while retaining Swiss mechanical movements at the heart of the watches.
That combination, local identity with Swiss mechanical technology, appears central to Constantime’s philosophy. The company is not positioning Transylvanian production as an alternative to Swiss watchmaking, but as a way of giving its watches a distinctive geographical and cultural identity.
The timeline is already beginning to develop. Constantime’s project began in 2025, with Genesis introduced as its inaugural model. In 2026, the company created a commemorative watch for Romanian Olympic gymnast Nadia Comăneci, marking 50 years since her first perfect 10. Genesis has also been submitted for evaluation to the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in the Challenge category, with committee confirmation awaited at the time of the press material’s publication. For a brand at such an early stage, that represents an intriguing trajectory.
The beginning of something special
What makes Constantime interesting is perhaps less the individual specifications of Genesis than the attempt to establish a genuine sense of place.
Independent watchmaking is often associated with the personality of its creator, but Mureșan is taking that idea a step further. With Constantime, the personality is being shared with a landscape: the citadels, fortified churches, vaulted ceilings and centuries of craftsmanship that surround the brand.
Genesis therefore represents more than the first watch from a new Romanian atelier. It is an attempt to establish a horological vocabulary rooted in Transylvania, and to demonstrate that independent watchmaking can emerge from anywhere there is a willingness to make, experiment and tell a story of its own.
There is still a long way to go. The proprietary case project remains in development and the Genesis collection comprises only 25 watches. But perhaps that is precisely what makes this first chapter worth watching.
