Jaeger-LeCoultre Reimagines Precision With The Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date
Jaeger-LeCoultre continues to demonstrate its mastery of high watchmaking with the unveiling of the Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date, a refined reinterpretation of one of its most celebrated calibres.

Combining technical ingenuity with a renewed aesthetic vision, this limited edition of 100 pieces pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Calibre 978 while embracing a contemporary design language.
First introduced two decades ago, Calibre 978 has long stood as a benchmark of chronometric excellence. Its reputation was firmly cemented in 2009 when it triumphed in a modern chronometry competition, undergoing a rigorous 45-day testing process that assessed not only precision but also durability under real-world conditions, including shocks and magnetic exposure. This latest evolution preserves that legacy while introducing a restructured architecture that enhances both performance and visual appeal.

At the heart of the watch lies the tourbillon, a complication originally conceived to counteract the effects of gravity on timekeeping. Here, it takes centre stage within an open-worked dial, showcasing the intricate regulating organ composed of 64 components and weighing less than half a gram. The movement’s redesign allows for greater visibility of its inner workings, reinforcing the Maison’s commitment to mechanical transparency.
One of the defining features of Calibre 978 remains its distinctive jumping date mechanism. Displayed around the dial’s periphery, the date indication performs a subtle yet ingenious motion each month, gliding from the 15th to the 16th to ensure the tourbillon remains unobstructed. This thoughtful detail exemplifies the balance between functionality and aesthetics that defines the piece.
Complementing this is a versatile 24-hour disc, which can function either as a day-night indicator or a second time zone. Independently adjustable, it adds a layer of practicality to an otherwise highly technical watch, underscoring Jaeger-LeCoultre’s holistic approach to design.
The movement itself is a showcase of artisanal craftsmanship. Comprising 305 components, it benefits from an array of traditional finishing techniques, including perlage, bevelling, Côtes de Genève, and diamond polishing. More than 30 components are decorated by hand, while 61 angles are meticulously bevelled, highlighting the depth of expertise across multiple specialised workshops.
Visually, the watch is equally compelling. The dial features a rich barleycorn guilloché pattern beneath layers of deep blue translucent enamel, creating a sense of depth and texture. Pink gilt brass hands and markers provide a warm contrast, while strategically placed apertures reveal key mechanical elements, including the calendar mechanism and structural components.
Encased in a 42 mm pink gold case composed of 60 individual parts, the watch reflects the refined codes of the Grande Tradition line. Alternating finishes, polished, brushed, and micro-blasted, create a dynamic interplay of light across its surfaces. A sapphire caseback offers an unobstructed view of the movement, while a black alligator leather strap completes the composition with understated elegance.
With the Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date, Jaeger-LeCoultre successfully bridges past and present. It honours a historically significant calibre while introducing a fresh perspective on design and mechanics, reaffirming its position at the forefront of haute horlogerie.
