Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 Interprets The Heavens

The new Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945, Jaeger-LeCoultre brings together the romance of the night sky, the precision of celestial mechanics and the artistry of Métiers Rares™ in one remarkable creation.

Limited to just five pieces, this latest interpretation of Calibre 945 transforms the wristwatch into a miniature celestial theatre. Its Northern Hemisphere sky chart follows the movement of the constellations in real time, while a flying Cosmotourbillon traces its own orbit around the dial in accordance with sidereal time. At the same time, a minute repeater gives voice to the passing hours, quarters and minutes.

It is a fitting expression of the Manufacture’s long fascination with astronomy and precision timekeeping, rooted in the Vallée de Joux, where Jaeger-LeCoultre has been creating watches since 1833.

A night sky brought to life

The artistic character of the Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 begins with its extraordinary multi-level dial. Constructed to echo the dome of the night sky, the dial creates an impression of depth through a succession of carefully considered layers. Beneath the celestial display sits a midnight-blue disc, finished with translucent lacquer over opaline, carrying the months and the seconds indication associated with the tourbillon.

Above it, the domed gold dial becomes the canvas for a remarkable interpretation of the heavens. Jaeger-LeCoultre has employed grisaille enamel, a demanding decorative technique that became part of the Manufacture’s Métiers Rares™ repertoire in 2022. With origins in 16th-century France, grisaille enamel is characterised by the creation of subtle monochromatic effects through successive layers of enamel, each one requiring individual firing.

Here, a deep blue ground establishes the darkness of the night sky, before the celestial landscape is painted by hand in Blanc de Limoges enamel. The contrast between light and dark produces a delicate chiaroscuro effect, giving the stars and celestial forms an almost three-dimensional presence.

The process alone requires approximately 24 hours of work. The result is an artistic interpretation that does not merely reproduce a star chart. Instead, it gives the impression of looking upwards into the heavens. Constellation names and the star chart are delicately transferred onto the surface, while the radiating seconds scale surrounding the Cosmotourbillon suggests beams of light emanating from its orbiting mechanism.

Time written in the stars

At the heart of Calibre 945 is one of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most distinctive horological inventions, the Cosmotourbillon. The tourbillon has traditionally been conceived as a mechanism designed to counter the effects of gravity on the regulating organ. Jaeger-LeCoultre takes the concept considerably further.

The flying Cosmotourbillon not only serves as a regulating mechanism but also becomes an astronomical indication in its own right. Completing an anti-clockwise circuit of the dial in one sidereal day, it measures time according to the rotation of the Earth relative to the fixed stars.

A sidereal day lasts 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds, subtly different from the 24-hour solar day upon which civil time is based. This distinction is central to the character of Calibre 945. The Cosmotourbillon moves in harmony with the Northern Hemisphere celestial disc, which represents the changing position of the constellations as viewed from Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux, home of Jaeger-LeCoultre since its foundation.

The movement becomes, in effect, a mechanical representation of the heavens above the Manufacture. The celestial disc is driven by a calendar complication, allowing the positions of the constellations to be precisely set. A golden sun-shaped pointer at the edge of the rotating disc completes one revolution every 24 hours, providing the familiar reference of civil time. Two different understandings of time therefore coexist on the same dial. One follows the Sun. The other follows the stars.

A tourbillon in orbit

The flying Cosmotourbillon is an extraordinary piece of engineering in its own right. Comprising 73 components, the mechanism is held within an exceptionally lightweight titanium carriage. Secured to the movement side only, it leaves the regulating organ remarkably open to view, enhancing both its technical and kinetic appeal.

The 10 mm monometallic balance wheel beats at 4 Hz and is mounted on lubricant-free ceramic ball bearings. Yet the technical sophistication is deliberately concealed within an overall composition that remains remarkably poetic. The tourbillon appears almost to float across the dial, its movement echoing the eternal motion of the celestial bodies represented around it.

This is where Jaeger-LeCoultre’s approach becomes particularly compelling. Complication is not simply displayed as a demonstration of mechanical ingenuity. It is integrated into a broader narrative about our relationship with time and the universe.

When time speaks

If the Cosmotourbillon gives the watch its celestial dimension, the minute repeater gives it a voice. The minute repeater is among traditional watchmaking’s most demanding complications. At the command of a slide on the side of the case, the mechanism translates the precise time into a sequence of strikes, distinguishing hours, quarters and minutes through different tones.

For Jaeger-LeCoultre, the pursuit of acoustic perfection has been a longstanding discipline. The Manufacture has developed numerous innovations in the field of chiming watches, including patented Cathedral crystal gongs, which extend around the calibre and are fixed to the rear sapphire crystal. Their construction is intended to enhance resonance and amplify the sound.

The minute repeater also incorporates patented Trébuchet hammers. Their distinctive construction allows the hammers to deliver greater energy to the gongs, contributing to a stronger and clearer chime. A patented silent governor ensures that the regulating mechanism operates without intruding upon the purity of the sound.

It is an appropriately poetic conclusion to the watch’s astronomical narrative. The heavens are represented visually across the dial, the passage of sidereal time is expressed mechanically through the orbiting Cosmotourbillon, and time itself can finally be heard through the minute repeater.

A case worthy of the complication

The complexity within Calibre 945 is matched by the sophistication of its case. Measuring 45 mm in diameter and 16.05 mm in thickness, the 18K white gold case comprises more than 80 individual components. Its architecture has been carefully shaped to complement the extraordinary dial. A convex bezel frames the celestial display, while broad bevels on the lugs introduce strong transitions between the different surfaces.

Micro-blasted details within the lugs provide additional contrast, while polished and satin-brushed surfaces capture and reflect the light in different ways. Even the minute repeater slide has been considered as part of the overall design. Its tapered form follows the curving profile of the case, ensuring that a fundamentally functional component becomes an integral part of the aesthetic composition.

In keeping with the watch’s considered approach to usability, there are no recessed buttons in the case for setting its various indications. Functions and displays are adjusted through the crown, leaving the case sides as clean as possible. The watch is completed by a blue alligator strap with small-scale alligator lining, chosen to complement the colour and texture of the enamelled dial.

An 18K white gold folding clasp incorporates a patented double-wheel adjustment mechanism, allowing the wearer to make precise adjustments in increments of just 0.5 mm.

The Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 is perhaps best understood not as a collection of complications, but as a conversation between them. The minute repeater represents time as sound. The Cosmotourbillon represents time as movement. The celestial disc represents time on a cosmic scale, and grisaille enamel transforms all three into an artistic composition.
