Panerai Draw Inspiration From Past Timepieces

Few watch designs are as instantly recognisable as the Luminor from Panerai. With the introduction of the new Luminor PAM01731 and Luminor Destro PAM01732, the Florentine watchmaker revisits one of its most important historical references while delivering a contemporary interpretation of its enduring tool-watch identity.

Both timepieces draw direct inspiration from the iconic Panerai Ref. 6152/1 of the 1960s, a watch created during Panerai’s era as a secret supplier of precision instruments for the Italian Navy. The unmistakable design codes remain firmly intact, including the cushion-shaped case, luminous sandwich dial, bold numerals and the patented crown-protecting bridge that has become synonymous with the Luminor line.

A Historic Case Reimagined

The Luminor case architecture has always evolved through necessity. From the early underwater instruments developed in the 1930s and 1940s, Panerai continually reinforced its cases to meet the demands of military diving operations. By the 1950s, references such as the 6154 and 6152 introduced large 47mm cases with integrated lugs and improved crown protection.

A defining innovation arrived in 1956 with the patented crown-protecting bridge, first seen on the GPF 2/56, a formidable 60mm diving watch supplied to the Egyptian Navy with the approval of the Italian Navy. By the 1960s, the Ref. 6152/1 had established the distinctive Luminor silhouette that remains central to the brand today.

For the first time, Panerai translates this historic case architecture into a more wearable 44mm format. The new models retain the essential geometry, including a true cushion-shaped middle case, a flat crown bridge and contrasting brushed and polished finishes, preserving the proportions of the original while adapting them for modern wrists.

Vintage Spirit with Contemporary Mechanics

Both watches feature a 44mm stainless steel case topped with a domed sapphire crystal, echoing the appearance of the PERSPEX® crystals used in vintage Luminor watches from the 1960s. This design choice enhances both depth and legibility.

Turning the watch over reveals the hand-wound Panerai P.6000 calibre through a sapphire caseback. This manufacture movement delivers a three-day power reserve and operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour. A traversing balance bridge improves stability, while the stop-seconds function allows for precise time setting.

The movement is finished with horizontal brushing and distinctive blue engravings, providing a subtle visual signature that reinforces the mechanical character of these hand-wound timepieces.

Water resistance is rated to 30 bar, or approximately 300 metres, which is particularly notable given the vintage-inspired construction. As with all Panerai watches, each piece undergoes extensive testing at the brand’s Laboratorio di Idee, including simulated ageing and pressure tests that exceed the rated depth by 25 percent.

Distinct Personalities

While sharing the same technical foundation, each reference presents its own interpretation of the Luminor design.

The Luminor PAM01731 features a rich tobacco-brown sandwich dial with beige Super-LumiNova® indexes and vintage-style double pencil hands. A small seconds display positioned at 9 o’clock completes the classic layout. The watch is paired with a dark brown vintage-style calf leather strap and is also supplied with an additional rubber strap in the same tone.

In contrast, the Luminor Destro PAM01732 adopts the distinctive “Destro” configuration, placing the crown-protecting bridge on the left side of the case. This layout was originally designed to allow military divers to wear the watch on their right wrist while keeping their left hand free for instruments such as a compass or depth gauge, and it remains one of Panerai’s most intriguing historical variations.

This model features a matte blue dial with the classic 12, 3, 6 and 9 numerals and a cleaner display without small seconds. It is delivered with a light brown calf leather strap and an additional blue rubber strap.

This model features a matte blue dial with the classic 12, 3, 6 and 9 numerals, along with a cleaner display that omits the small seconds. It is delivered with a light brown calf leather strap and an additional blue rubber strap.

The new Luminor PAM01731 and Luminor Destro PAM01732 will arrive in Panerai boutiques from April 2026, continuing the brand’s tradition of blending historic design with modern watchmaking performance.
