Panerai Pays Homage To Its Power Reserve Legacy

Panerai’s heritage is rooted in the creation of robust, mission-critical instruments for military use, where reliability and autonomy were essential. Extended power reserves became a defining characteristic of the brand’s watches, allowing military personnel to rely on uninterrupted timekeeping while reducing wear from frequent winding.

The Panerai Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631 builds on this legacy, representing the brand’s ongoing pursuit of technical innovation and precision. The concept of extended autonomy has been integral to Panerai’s identity since the mid-1950s, when the company first adopted the hand-wound Angelus® SF240 movement.

At the time, Giuseppe Panerai sought a superior mechanism for the GPF 2/56 project, selecting a calibre from Angelus, owned by Stolz Frères S.A. Known for producing high-quality table clocks sold through the family’s Orologeria Svizzera store, Angelus developed the large 16-ligne SF240 movement with an impressive eight-day power reserve, around 200 hours, a remarkable achievement for its era.

“At Panerai, our heritage is the bedrock of every timepiece, each infused with the distinctive creativity of our Italian design. We are driven to continually push the boundaries of R&D, especially in areas central to our DNA, such as power reserve technology. The new Luminor 31 Giorni stands as a powerful testament to this philosophy, showcasing Panerai’s profound mastery of power reserve and the relentless innovation of our Laboratorio di Idee.”

Alessandro Ficarelli, Chief Marketing and Product Officer, Panerai

This pursuit of long-lasting autonomy continued into the modern era. In 2005, Panerai introduced the P.2002 calibre, the first movement developed at its Neuchâtel Manufacture, offering an eight-day power reserve powered by a patented three-barrel configuration. Two years later, the P.2003 became the brand’s first in-house automatic movement with a 10-day (240-hour) power reserve.

Now Panerai takes the concept further with an extraordinary 31-day power reserve, a first for the Maison. Developed over seven years by the brand’s Laboratorio di Idee, the research and development hub within the Neuchâtel Manufacture, the movement represents the culmination of extensive experimentation in extended power reserve engineering.

Despite its mechanical complexity, the PAM01631 remains faithful to Panerai’s philosophy of producing clear and functional instruments designed for optimal legibility and practical use. The watch is housed in a 44mm Panerai Goldtech™ case – a proprietary alloy combining gold and copper with small amounts of platinum and silver to enhance durability. The result is a distinctive red-gold hue alongside improved resistance and longevity.

Inside beats the newly developed P.2031/S, a hand-wound skeletonised calibre that reveals the intricate architecture of the movement. Comprising 276 components and 25 jewels, the calibre achieves its remarkable autonomy through a sophisticated system of four barrels arranged in series. Together they house 3.3 metres of mainsprings, delivering a continuous 31-day power reserve.

Panerai’s approach uses a “low torque” configuration with faster barrel rotation, reducing friction and stress on the movement’s pivots. The system also enables the watch to run for a full month with just 128 turns of the crown, eliminating the need for specialised winding tools often required for ultra-long reserve movements.

A key technical highlight is the patent-pending Torque Limiter system, designed to enhance precision and reliability. While the movement is capable of generating up to 36 days of power, the system selects an optimal 31-day operating window, trimming the highest and lowest torque levels to maintain stable performance throughout the running time. Once the 31-day period is reached, the movement intentionally stops even if power remains, protecting the mechanism and preserving long-term accuracy.

Another notable feature is the patented jumping hour mechanism with an innovative spring geometry. This allows the hour hand to be adjusted independently without affecting the minutes or seconds, making time-setting both quick and precise.

The skeletonised architecture offers a striking view of the exposed barrels and mechanical components, further highlighted by a sapphire crystal caseback. Meanwhile, a clever polarised date disc appears only within the window at 3 o’clock, ensuring the open-worked dial remains visually balanced.

A curved power reserve indicator follows the perimeter of the movement, providing a clear and intuitive display of the remaining energy. Subtle design details maintain the watch’s clarity: the rehaut features only the numerals 12 and 6, while indexes and hands are coated in white Super-LumiNova® X2 for excellent legibility in low-light conditions.

Water-resistant to 10 bar, the PAM01631 undergoes Panerai’s rigorous testing regime, including pressure tests exceeding its rated depth by 25%. The watch is fitted with the new Panerai Goldtech™ folding clasp featuring the PAM Click Release System™, allowing tool-free strap changes between a black alligator strap and a rubber alternative while keeping the watch securely attached during removal.

Limited to 200 pieces, the Panerai Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631 is available exclusively through Panerai boutiques.
